Books About Kindness: A Read-Aloud List

Twelve read-alouds that do the teaching for you

Ages 4–93 pagesReading & Books

Instant PDF download · print at home · letter size, ready in seconds

Nobody ever became kinder from a lecture. Stories are a different animal: kids climb inside them, feel what the characters feel, and come out the other side a little softer. This free list gathers twelve picture books that do that work beautifully, from the bucket-filling classic to the quiet heartbreaker your library holds behind the counter because it keeps getting checked out.

What’s inside (3 pages)

  • The list, part one and two. Twelve books with author names and an honest one-liner on why each earns its spot. All twelve are well-loved picture books for roughly ages 4 to 9, findable at any library.
  • A heart tracker. Twelve outline hearts, one per book. Finish a book together, color a heart. Small ritual, real momentum.

The pause-and-ponder trick

Once per book, stop at the turning point and ask one question: “what would you have done?” Then just listen. We wrote about why this works better than any lecture in Why Stories Teach Character Better Than Lectures, and it is the same idea behind our own storybook series, where eight kids practice kindness and courage in stories built for exactly these conversations.

Common questions

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. Once it's yours, it's yours. Print fresh copies as often as you like for the people in your own home, this year and every year after. Many families print one for each person, reprint a page when a first try becomes a happy mess, or slip a copy into a dry-erase sleeve so it can be used again and again. The only thing we ask is that you don't share or resell the file itself; printing for your own household, as often as you need, is exactly what it's made for.

What sizes do the pages come in, and will they print at home?

Most of our printables include three ready-made sizes: US Letter (8.5" × 11"), A4, and A5, so they fit a standard binder, an A5 planner, or the fridge door equally well; the "What's inside" list above shows exactly what's included with this one. The files are high-resolution PDFs that print crisply on any ordinary home printer, in color or plain black-and-white, on regular paper or cardstock. No special software is needed; anything that opens a PDF can print it.

How do I get it?

It's a free instant download, right from this page: no email address, no checkout, no waiting. Click the download button above and the PDF lands straight in your downloads folder, ready to print. If you'd like first dibs on future freebies, the Kind Street email list is where new printables are announced first, but the download is yours either way.

Can I use it for a classroom or co-op?

The included license covers personal use for your own household: printing for yourself, your kids, and your immediate family. If you'd love to use it with a co-op group, a classroom, or another larger setting, we're genuinely happy to chat about it; just send a note to info@kindstreetlibrary.com and we'll work out something fair. What we can't allow is sharing or reselling the files themselves, which keeps a small family shop like ours able to keep making these.
